BitDefender 2008 protects the operating system by providing a security layer. It detects the known viruses and cleans them and does not allow the new ones. It removes Roorkit, does web scanning, filters viruses, blocks Spyware, guards your privacy with encrypting your social security number and credit card number. ICSA Labs, Virus Bulletin, Checkmark, CheckVir and TÜV have certified its scan engines as powerful. It comes on a bootable CD which makes it capable to start even a damaged system with its sequence of analysis; repair and disinfecting before making the system run again.

When it is installed, there is a setup program that helps the user to select update settings, schedules a scanning time, and to quickly register and activate the software. Most of its functions become automatic with little user dialogue which makes it quick and less clumsy thereby improving user experience. It gets automatically updated every 24 hours from the internet, directly or though a proxy server. The missing files get updated and the damaged parts get automatically repaired. No matter, it is an effective antivirus, but It terms of speed, it is slow compared to MacAfee virus scan plus and takes twice the space than that of ESet Nod32. This perhaps is expected because of its B-Have (Behavioral Heuristic Analyzer in Virtual Environments) which runs pieces of software in checking malefic software.
